African Cichlids Articles:

Buttikoferi Cichlid A large aquarium of at least 70 gallons is required to house a pair of Buttikoferi Cichlids. African cichlids should be kept in a dedicated aquarium. That is, don't try mixing them with New world cichlids or with your community fish, unless you want to be responsible for a total Massacre.

The Cobalt Blue Zebra Cichlid comes from the rocky shores of Lake Malawi, Africa. The coloration of the Cobalt Blue is a pale blue background with seven to eight blue-black bars with four orange egg-shaped spots on the anal fin.

The Electric Blue Cichlid does well with other Lake Malawi cichlids when provided with a spacious, rocky tank of 70 gallons or more. Although plants are extraneous for the African Cichlid, they may be beneficial for other tank members; however, fish larger than three inches will often uproot live plants.

The Frontosa African Cichlid is a fairly typical member of the Cichlidae family. Both sexes are characterized by a large frontal hump which will develop as the fish reaches maturity, or attains a length of around 4 inches.

Gold Sexfasciatus Cichlid Keep them in an aquarium of at least 50 gallons with other Tanganyikan or Malawian cichlids of similar size. Incorporate plenty of rocks, shells and African driftwood in order to build caves. Provide a sandy bottom of aragonite to maintain the necessary high pH and alkalinity.

The Julido Ornatus Cichlid is a tank-raised variety of the Julidochromis Ornatus which originates from the rocky shorelines of Lake Tanganyika, Africa.

Melanochromis Auratus These little cichlids (5-6 in) are native to Malawi and are very popular among aquarists. As they grow males turn blue while females remain yellow with black and white horizontal stripes. Despite their size, both sexes are territorial and extremely aggressive.

The Orange Neolamprologus Leleupi Cichlid originates from the rocky coastal waters of Southern Lake Tanganyika, Africa. This species is one of the smaller of the cichlids, only attaining a maximum size of 4 inches.

The Tropheus Duboisi Cichlid A beautiful species and are completely black as a juvenile with many white spots. As they mature, the spots fade and their head takes on a blue coloration.

Tropheus Cichlid are often territorial and may be intolerant of members of their own species. However, they seldom harass other tankmates.

Venustus Cichlid A beautiful African cichlid the Venustus has “giraffe-spot” patterns which make them very attractive; their colors will change as they age or when breeding. They can grow up to 10 in (25 cm) requiring a large aquarium.
